Sleeping under the stars
Hi Friends! How was your Saturday? Great? That's nice to hear.
Sometime back in November, I did a list of things I have and haven't done in my life, thanks to Donna for sharing that list with me. And my score was 37 out of 100. And I did mention that I intend to make plans to increase this score in 2009.
Hence, I'm going to start from the top. The first thing at the top that I haven't done, is to sleep under the stars.
I think I have valid excuses for why I haven't done this until now:
1. The weather in Malaysia - It is very difficult to predict if it will rain or not at night. And we do get a lot of rainfall in Malaysia, for your information.
2. No safe place for doing that - First, you have to worry about things like snakes, centipedes, mosquitoes, giant killer ants, cockroaches, and all sorts of weird looking bugs. Then, you have to worry about somebody robbing you. Next, you have to worry about someone raping you. You might ask, doesn't that happen elsewhere too? Well, you have to know Malaysia to understand the fear people have here, with regards to all of the above. It's very different from some countries where people can leave their gates unlocked, or doors unlocked, and can sleep in the meadow peacefully.
3. Haven't really put my mind to it, the time, place, etc.
Well, you might say, JUST DO IT! And worry later. I seriously do want to do it. To experience how it feels to just sleep with nothing above me but the sky full of bright, twinkling stars, and the big fat moon, of course.
So, without anymore delaying or giving excuses, I'M GOING TO DO IT!
What about #1? Well, I would just have to ask God to not rain on the night I'm doing it.
What about #2? I think, the safest place, with the lowest chances of finding any of those pests or criminals, would be on the beach. Besides, I would love to hear the wishy washy sound of the sea. It's hypnotic and soothing, and oh, the clear, clean air :)
So when am I going to do it? This coming Friday, January 9. I'm going to drive to Melaka after work, and just bunk into one of the beaches there. The beaches there are not as beautiful as the ones on the eastern coast of West Malaysia, or the whole of East Malaysia, but it'll have to suffice because it's monsoon season on the east!
It's about 1-2 hours away, so I'll leave after work. I wish I could do this together with my baby but there's no time in February or July for this.
And the good thing is, I can have Melakan food for breakfast :) Heheheh... So pray for a good weather for me, and for safety too :P

As a world traveller and someone who has slept under the stars in jungles and remote areas of the world--I DO NOT recommend doing this alone. Don't forget fire...fire is important.
Can't you bring a friend? Keep us updated as to how you're planning this...I'm interested to see :)
Good luck, buddy!
I'm with Ron on not doing this alone, John. Take a friend with you! You'll not only have a bit more protection should evil come calling, you'll have someone to share the memories with later down the road.
I shall pray for no rain for you,and safety but I'll also pray for a companion for you as well.
Ron is right about another thing: You will want a fire on the beach for several reasons. Sitting by a campfire at night beats all! It's a peaceful feeling--one with the earth. It will also blow off any chill in the air that might be there and keep any large critters away that may be lurking around.
Please do keep us updated!
I also agree with Ron. I have slept at the beach and you definitely need a fire!
Make sure it is okay to build one. If it is a public beach they may not allow it and if it is a private beach you may have to get permission.
Take warm clothing and most definitely a companion!
Can't wait to hear how you survived the beach in January!
OK ... it's unanimous ... TAKE A FRIEND! Seriously ... not just because some evil person may want to hurt you (which is reason enough) but what if you are taking a swim or walking in a remote area of the beach or cutting firewood and you get hurt ... who will go for help? Believe me ... people have died because they didn't have someone to help them when they needed it. Have we convinced you? That being said ... I hope you ... AND YOUR FRIEND ... have fun!

John, we gotta talk, buddy.
There's a lot to plan before you do this. Things could get ugly if you're not prepared. I'll shoot you an email beginning of the week with a list of "must haves."
Wow--braveheart!
But don't go there unprepared...and if u will do it---better expect the unexpected and if u have to do it, bring some friends--ya know? Don't go alone! Remember that u have to tell us about ur wedding...
BTW---loved the header...soooo soothing in my eyes and just wonderful
Wow! Friends, I must say thanks for the warning and advice. I know nuts about these kind of things, and being the kind of person I am, I would, as Mys Lyke Meeh puts it, braveheartedly march headlong into danger. I will put the update to this plan in the next post!
